Academic Programmes

Following the reorganization of the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management on 1 July 2008, two of the taught masters programmes formerly associated with CUPEM have been relocated to the Kadoorie Institute.

The Master of Social Sciences in Corporate Environmental Governance is taught by Institute staff and specialist visiting lecturers, mainly from outside Hong Kong. The Programme Director is Richard Welford. This programme focuses on corporate social responsibility with a strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental issues and is specially designed for those who wish to develop their knowledge on how business deals with these issues, both locally and internationally. The degree is awarded by the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Staff of the Institute and specialist part-time lecturers contribute several courses to the Master of Science in Environmental Management, including principles of sustainable development, environmental policy, environmental economics and environmental auditing and reporting. This degree is awarded by the Faculty of Science. The programme provides a comprehensive perspective on contemporary environmental management problems and policy responses, in Hong Kong and overseas. It is suitable for students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds.

Institute teaching staff also offer supervision for PhD and MPhil students in various fields related to sustainability and environmental issues. Our particular interests and strengths relate to environmental policy in Hong Kong and Asia; sustainable development and ecological modernisation; corporate environmental governance; public health and the environment; and, public sector management and performance.
