Welcome to the Kadoorie Institute

The Kadoorie Institute came into existence on 1 July 2008.  It is a new initiative of the University of Hong Kong. The Institute’s principal role is to act as a focal point for promoting developments in research, teaching, consultancy and community outreach in the fields of sustainability and the environment.

The Institute is interdisciplinary in nature and engages with a broad spectrum of academic research. Contributing researchers are drawn from various faculties within the University, including biological sciences, engineering sciences and the social sciences.  Institute staff are also working on a variety of consultancy projects for local and international organizations. These projects include community engagement exercises, sustainability assessments, and curriculum development and training support.

Institute staff already have well-established links with researchers in China, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Thailand, Germany and Vietnam and we are in the process of extending our international academic and professional networks in the sustainability/environment field.

The Institute’s academic staff teach the MSocSc. in Corporate Environmental Governance. This programme is offered in association with the Faculty of Social Sciences. We also teach several courses on the MSc in Environmental Management which is offered by the Faculty of Science.  We offer courses in the Global Studies option of the BSocSc degree of the Faculty of Social Sciences.  We have approximately 12 full-time and part-time PhD and MPhil students.

As well as its on-campus offices, the Institute manages a major research and residential/conference facility at Shek Kong (formerly known as the Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre) and the newly opened Lung Fu Shan Environmental Education Centre.
